Races of Parvain: Homid: Humanoid beings who are distinguished by their lack of changed traits. Homids are among the most ubiquitous of the races of Parvain along with the many substypes of Fera; while the northern Kingdom of York is the one nation where Homids are the most common, Homids comprise a significant part of the population of various other states. Homids are of average strength and capability in comparison to other races; while Homids are less susceptible to developing Artes than all non-Andvar races, they nonetheless possess great potential for using Arcana and human arcanists are reasonably common. It is theorised by some scholars that Homids were the original race of Parvain, with the others developing from Homids due to exposure to Alphinite and their environmental pressures; such theories are considered crackpot by all but the most fringe of scientists, especially given the lack of accounting for the origins of the Daphne or Andvar. Kamuy: Distinguished by the constructs floating over their heads, Kamuy are among the rarest of the races of Parvain. Comprising a significant minority of various nations outside of the insular Holy Republic of Chaldea and the distant eastern island of Yamajima, Kamuy are renown for their sensitivity to Alphinite, with a high proportion of Kamuy developing Artes and a high compatibility for Arcana. Kamuy are distinguished through unusually vibrant eyes and a signature floating construct above their heads; for most, it is a halo, though some have crystals, orbs or other ethereal shapes floating above their heads. These halos glow in the presence of Alphinite or when using Artes or Arcana. In history, powerful Kamuy were often mistaken for gods or demons, and thus faced massive persecution from those afraid of their abilities, with reports of Kamuy being sacrificed to appease other gods being common. There may have been Kamuy subraces in the past, as evidenced by cave paintings; however, they have since disappeared from the world, possibly due to persecution. Salis: Winged humanoids, Salis are well-accounted for among the populations of Parvain, preferring mountainous nations such as western Vespalia and Saari. Salis wings vary in appearance, from insect-like to almost crystalline; they are often translucent, glowing when using Artes and Arcana, but useless for sustained flight and instead allowing the user to hop higher and farther distances than members of other races. For this reason, Salis are often banned from entering gymnastics competitions. Salis are also generally physically smaller and frailer than other races, with their tallest individuals not growing beyond six feet and the average being around five feet. Salis are generally sensitive to Alphinite; after Kamuy, Salis are the most likely to be susceptible to developing Artes after exposure to Alphinite in the womb. It is theorised that Salis wings are actually projections of Alphinite within Salis biology, as a result of Alphinite being incorporated in their biology at some point in their past. Daphne: Plant-like humanoids, Daphne are considered to be the odd race out in Parvain, owing to their unique traits. Daphne are distinigushed by two specific traits common to all Daphne; greenish skin, due to their chloroplasts that allow Daphne to photosynthesise and sustain themselves in times of hunger, and flower or leaf-like growths on their heads, which seem to serve no purpose. Some Daphne possess vine-like prehensile hair, or bark-like growths along the limbs, but this is rarer than the norm. It is theorised that their plant-like biology render Daphne resistant to Alphinite influence more than other non-Homid races outside of the Andvar; however, a significant minority are still born with Artes, and the scent of Daphne floral growths have been observed to be more intense when a Daphne uses Alphinite or an Arte. Daphne prefer temperate climates, and prefer warm areas most of all; though Saari is far north, the volcanic activity around Saari makes the nation a suitable homeland for most Daphne. The major subraces among the Daphne are Dryads, who lack the green skin and instead have more tree-like features along the extremities, and the Myconids, who have white skin and instead possess fungi-like features such as bioluminescence. Belgor: Belgor are horned humanoids similar in appearance to Homids; the horns can manifest anywhere on the head, and often appear either as a lone horn or as a pair, though three horns are rare, but not unheard of. Belgor also possess small tails, often with reddish skin different from their normal skin tone; though prehensile, their tails are often too short and thin to be useful for anything except for party tricks. Due to their appearance, Belgor in various areas faced discrimination in the past as untrustworthy thieves, despite being no more or less inclined to criminality than other races; the efforts of the Belgor heroes of the Elerian Order did much to rehabilitate their reputation, and in the present day, Belgor are no more hated than other races. There are also two major subraces among the Belgor; Oni, who have unusual physical strength matching that of the Andvar, and Vampires, whose pale countenance, smaller horns and longevity led to rumours that they drank blood, and subsequent harsher persecution than most Belgor. Andvar: Andvar are among the toughest and hardiest of the people of Parvain. Andvar are often dark-haired, and told apart from tanned humans with their distinctive pointed ears. Muscular, dark-skinned and large, Andvar are often the largest people around, with their smallest individuals rivalling individuals of above-average height in other races and the average height being around seven or eight feet. Andvar are notoriously hardy, with tough skin and dense muscles, being able to survive anything from the hottest to the coldest environments, even being able to weather a Calamity's ravages unprotected for short periods. This resilience comes at a cost; Andvar are very resistant to Alphinite, to the point that Andvar born with Artes are rare, and Andvar arcanists are rare as not many possess the aptitude to use Alphinite and channel the energy within it. As a result, when Andvar show potential as arcanists or show Artes, they are often sent to the Elerian academies or areas with their own arcane education, as the specialist expertise needed to educate arcanists is rare in areas of majority Andvar population. Fera: The second most ubiquitous people in Parvain after Homids, Fera are distinguished by possessing traits of animals; ears and horns are the most common, though feathers, tails and animal-like extremities are not-unknown. Fera have superior senses to Homids, but are otherwise of similar strength and physical capabilities. The rivalry between Homid and Fera has defined their relationship in the past, owing to both races being the most populous; however, in recent times, the rivalry has died down, outside of fierce competition in sports, mercantile pursuits and the tournaments between Elerian academies. Their relationship to Alphinite is the reverse of those of Homids; while they have a higher proportion of individuals born with Artes, they have less individuals attuned towards become arcanists. Fera are further divided into various subraces. - Felis: Cat Fera - Simis: Ape Fera - Bovis: Cow Fera - Dracis: Dragon Fera - Avis: Bird Fera - Lupis: Dog Fera - Scaris: Reptilian Fera - Ursis: Bear Fera - Muscis: Rodent Fera - Lepis: Rabbit Fera
